We have lost an icon in the world of Architecture and one of the foremost architects of Tanzania's Modernist Architecture! The renowned Arch. Almeida aged 98, passed away on Sunday 17th March 2019 at his home in Oysterbay, Dar es Salaam. Anthony Bosco Almeida was born in 1921 in Tanzania (then Tanganyika). He studied architecture at Sir J. J. School of architecture in Bombay in India and he qualified for the membership of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) in 1948. He is the first Chartered Architect in the Republic of Tanzania. Among his revered works is the St. Xaviers Primary School (1955). After Tanzanian independence he was commissioned a number of projects including the Goan Club in Dar e s Salaam (1960), St. Joseph’s Primary School in Dar es Salaam (1961), St. Francis Xavier Church in Chang’ombe Dar es Salaam (1962), East African community Headquarters in Dar es Salaam (1965), Tanzania harbours headquarters in Dar es Salaam (1965), Tabora Boys Secondary School in Tabora (1965); Tanzania Central Library in Dar es Salaam (1968), National Insurance of Tanzania, Headquarters Building in Dar es Salaam (1970), Joint Christian Chapel of the University of Dar es Salaam (1975), and his own residential house. Right up to his passing Arch. Almeida was a strong proponent of conserving our architectural heritage, may his legacy live on. May his soul rest in peace.
